The appendix is a small, worm-like appendage attached to the colon. If you experience the signs of appendicitis, you need to contact the emergency department of a hospital or get in touch with your doctor immediately. If treatment is delayed, the appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis usually happens after an infection in the digestive tract, or when the tube connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked by trapped feces or food.
If you have appendicitis, your pain will increase when the doctor gently presses on your lower right belly area. If the blockage continues, the inflamed tissue becomes infected with bacteria and begins to die from a lack of blood supply, which finally results in the rupture of the appendix (perforated or ruptured appendix).
